Adventures in History

Earlier this fall we enjoyed a presentation by Dr. Gary Knight on the Jones County War, hearing the real life story behind the film “Free State of Jones.” Dr. Knight’s ancestor, Newton Knight, a Mississippi farmer, launched an insurrection against the South during the Civil War. It is this story that drives the film, released in June, 2016, starring Mathew McConaughey.

In September, in conjunction with the Mancos Valley Library, Bill Jamerson presented hilarious stories, foot tapping songs, and a short video on the Dollar-A-Day Boys, otherwise known as the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Monthly Meetings

The Monthly Meeting - open to all membership -- meets on the 4th Thursday of the month at 4:30 pm at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall at the corner of Grand Ave. and Oak Street.

2nd Annual Turkey Shoot!

Our 2nd Annual Turkey Shoot is scheduled for Saturday, November 5th at the Simmons Gravel Pit, about 2.5 miles west of the Mancos stoplight on the north side of Highway 160 starting at 9:30 am. Watch for signs! We will have coffee, hot chocolate and "goodies" for sale in our concession stand. We had a lot of fun last year in spite of the mud. Please put this event on your calendar and maybe you can win your Thanksgiving turkey, which you will pick up at P & D.
